You have reached the home page of U3A Shoalhaven. The U3A movement in Australia is a loose collection of local U3A organisations who all support the general aims and directions of providing life-long learning opportunities for their members in their ‘third age’ using the skills of their members gained during their ‘second age.
U3A is an international movement which promotes and practises lifelong learning by providing low cost educational opportunities for retired people in a relaxed and informal environment. No prior educational qualifications are required; no degrees are awarded.
U3A Shoalhaven began in 1987 with 30 members. Today, we have about 330 active members. Some members become inactive for a while but the number remains pretty constant as new people come to settle in the area. This enables us to maintain and expand upon a variety of interesting courses as well as welcoming new participants with fresh thoughts and ideas.
The Committee would like to invite anyone who has ever thought they might like to be a Course Leader but didn’t think they could do it for whatever reason to contact the Course Co-ordinator or the Secretary. Courses can be about something you have a lot of experience in or something you are passionate about. See the page “Activities” for an indication of what we cover. See also Philosophy. If you have an idea for a new course – we would love to hear about it. See also Presenter Guidelines (technical)
How to join
If you would like to become a member, go to “U3ACourse Booking Form” which you can fill in on-line, print and post to the Secretary. You can enrol in courses on the same form. ENROLMENTS: Will be taken in the office or by mail. Check links at the top for current courses.
U3A Shoalhaven owns no premises of its own and courses are generally held in rooms at 5/48 Berry Street Nowra. We do not have general meetings apart from the Annual General Meeting which is held at the beginning of Term 4.
A couple of years ago we completed a major renovation which was made possible thanks to a $6500.00 grant from the IMB Bank Community Fund. Shoalhaven U3A is very grateful to the IMB Bank for this support.
Members should familiarise themselves with resources available through our parent organisation and could start ” Here.” In particular there are opportunities to explore topics that are not in our course list. There is a library of topics which are downloadable, some in pdf format and others in PowerPoint format. See the catalogues “Here”. If you find something there that appeals to you there is a link there for contacting the librarian and arranging a download
